A message unit that contains source and destination address information, as well as the data itself, which is routed through a packet-switching network. The data held in the datagram is often referred to as the payload, and the addressing information is usually contained in the header. Because the destination address is contained in all datagrams, they do not have to arrive in consecutive order. Datagrams are commonly used in connectionless transmission systems. IP (Internet Protocol) and IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) are both datagram services.
